2012 Special Awards

 

 

This is a listing of the organizations that are offering Special Awards at this year's Metro Richmond Science Fair.  Some of the qualifications for the awards are included.  Some of the awards are for Senior Division projects only, while some can be given to Junior Division students.  Many of the awards consist of a certificate or a medallion.  A few include a monetary prize.  If you win any of these awards, make sure to include the information on your college application or resume.

American Meteorological Society
This organization presents a certificate of outstanding achievement for ability and creativity in an atmospheric or related oceanic and hydrologic science exhibit.

American Psychological Association

Presents a certificate of achievement to recognize outstanding research in psychology under the category of behavioral and social sciences.

American Society for Nondestructive Testing, Old Dominion Section

This organization presents both a Junior Division and a Senior Division certificate & monetary award for the best research project that exemplifies the use of non-destructive testing.

ASM Materials Education Foundation
Presents an award, consisting of a certificate and a medallion, for the most outstanding exhibit in materials engineering.

Association for Women Geoscientists
Awards a certificate of merit to a female student whose project exemplifies high standards of innovativeness and scientific excellence in the geosciences. Special consideration is given to projects that increase the public awareness of the geosciences, illustrate the interdisciplinary nature of the geosciences, or promote the sensitivity to the earth as a global system.

Department of the Navy
Presents awards to recognize outstanding research projects in science and engineering to both Junior and Senior Divisions.

The John B. Fenn Award
The John B. Fenn Award will be given annually at the Metro Richmond Science Fair to 1 - 3 students in the Senior category in order to recognize the most promising young scientist(s) for an "innovation in applied science that incorporates transdisciplinary research”

Intel Excellence in Computer Science

Intel recognizes outstanding achievement in the Senior Division category of Computer Science with a certificate and a check for $200.

Mu Alpha Theta, the National High School Mathematics Honor Society

This organization awards a certificate to the student in grades 9 - 12 who demonstrates the most challenging, original, thorough and creative investigation of a problem involving mathematics.

NACE International
The local chapter of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers awards a certificate of merit and a monetary award to the best projects that demonstrate awareness of the importance of controlling and preventing corrosion. One award in each division (Junior & Senior) will be presented.

NA-YGN Nuclear Science & Technology Award
The North American Young Generation in Nuclear presents an award that recognizes an outstanding project in such fields as nuclear medicine, energy, and radiation.

National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration

NOAA presents a certificate and a medallion to one person in either the Junior or Senior Division whose research emphasizes NOAA's mission to understand and predict changes in Earth's environment and conserve and manage coastal and marine resources to meet our Nation's economic, social, and environmental needs.

National Society of Professional Engineers

This organization presents a certificate and a lapel pin. One $1000 National NSPE/PEI Innovative Engineering Award will be chosen from the pool of Regional Intel ISEF Competition winners.

Randolph-Macon College  NEW!

Randolph-Macon College, located in Ashland, VA, will be selecting two students to receive scholarships to attend the college.  These awards are for $2500 and $5000 and are renewable for 4 years for a total of $10,000 and $20,000 respectively. 

Richmond Astronomical Society
Several monetary awards are offered for projects dealing with astronomy or space science. Contact the society through their web site http://www.richastro.org/ for mentorship opportunities.

Richmond Beekeepers Association

This organization presents a monetary award and a certificate to one project from each Division.  Qualifying projects will involve some type of agricultural science.

Ricoh Sustainable Development Award

The Ricoh Americas Corporation presents an award consisting of a certificate of merit to the project that offers the greatest potential for increasing our ability to grow environmentally friendly and socially responsible businesses.

 

Society for In Vitro Biology

The SIVB presents an award consisting of a certificate of merit to the most outstanding 11th grade student with a project in the areas of plant or animal in vitro biology or tissue culture.

Stockholm Junior Water Prize

These 3 awards are given to the Senior Division students with the best projects on water quality. Winners then register their projects online to be eligible for the state awards. The top state winner goes on to represent Virginia at the national competition.

U. S. Air Force

The Air Force recognizes 3 projects that offer Air Force applicability.  Awards vary each year.  In 2011, these awards consist of a certificate, a computer backpack, a charging stand and a notebook with a flash drive.

U. S. Army

The Army selects 5 outstanding Senior Division projects in several categories for recognition. Awards vary each year. One student is selected as the overall winner.

U. S. Metric Association
Presents an award to the Senior Division student whose project involves a significant amount of quantitative measurement and which best uses the SI metric system for those measurements.

Virginia Dental Association
Presents an award to the best project in each category and a monetary award to the overall best project.

Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association (VLWA)

The mission of the Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association is to conduct educational and scientific efforts to protect the quality and uses of Virginia's water resources and watersheds. VLWA is offering a $50 award to a Junior Division student and a $100 award to a Senior Division student.

Virginia Section of the American Chemical Society
This group offers monetary awards to the 1st and 2nd place winners in Senior Chemistry with matching awards given to the Science Departments of the winners' schools.

Virginia Section of the American Water Works Association

The VA AWWA awards are presented to students whose projects deal with some aspect of water, preferably drinking water. The 1st and 2nd place awards may consist of a monetary award and a certificate.

 

Yale Science & Engineering Association, Inc.
Awards a certificate and a medallion to the most outstanding 11th grade exhibit in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics or Chemistry.
